Yuma Democrats held their annual Spring Salute on Friday, April 28….a pleasant & successful evening at Gowan Patio. About 100 people attended to enjoy a cocktail hour and then a delicious meal catered by Bob Nidifer. The DeDecker duo entertained with songs from the 70’s-and 80’s and helped to remind us of the decades when we all knew changes needed be made, much like our political situation now.
V. Chair Thelma Lundy opened the evening with a welcome to guests and introduced elected officials past & present in attendance, including Supervisor Lynn Pancrazi, Yuma County Treasurer Angela Moreno, Hon. Maria Elena Cruz, AZ, State Senator Lisa Otondo, Judge Tom Thode, and Judge Jeffries.
Guest speaker State Senator Katie Hobbs talked about the problems our state schools are facing and the need to reimburse public schools for the monies taken by the state. She spoke of her campaign for Arizona Secretary of State, saying while many people run for Secretary of State as a jumping off spot to the governor’s office, she will run the office as it was meant to be run, efficiently encouraging government transparency, regulating elections and campaign finance.
Door prizes were awarded and the annual appreciation certificates were awarded. The honorees were Lenore Stuart, Gail Beeler, Colby Girard and Judge Maria Cruz. The 50/50 raffle winner was announced.
YCDP V. Chair Dante Mitchell closed the evening with a talk about the need for all of us to become activists in order to make our democracy strong and good.
THANK YOU to the staffers who helped—Thelma Lundy, Dante Mitchell, Lenore Stuart, Xanthe Bullard, Cindy Kypros, Beverly Frame, Karen Watts, Jeanne Glover, Jason Bradley & Mark Newton. Say THANK YOU to the 2017 Spring Fling director MARY BARKLEY at firstname.lastname@example.org.
